About Laitlum Canyon
A hilltop viewpoint in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, near Smit village and about 25 km from Shillong.
Where Laitlum is
Laitlum is in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, about 25 km by road from Shillong. The last 5 km or so runs from Smit village to the canyon. It is often confused with Sohra (Cherrapunji), a separate destination south-west of Shillong, so ask for the canyon viewpoint beyond Smit.
What you will see
The appeal is simple: a grassy hilltop, a deep valley and layers of green hills. A viewpoint visit can be gentle, while the routes descending into the valley are an entirely different undertaking.
What the name means
Meghalaya Tourism translates Laitlum as "the end of the hills", and that is how it feels: the grassy ridge simply stops and the land falls away into the gorge. "The end of the world" is a travel nickname, not a translation.
A living place, not only a viewpoint
Smit and the valley villages are living Khasi communities. Ask before taking portraits, respect private land, avoid loud music and take all packaging back with you.
The weather decides the view
Mist is part of the landscape, and mornings can be foggy. Even in the recommended October-May season, a clear panorama is never guaranteed. Plan enough time to wait safely or change your itinerary.
How long to spend
Most visitors spend one to two hours at the viewpoints. With the drive from Shillong, that makes a comfortable half day, or a full day if you add Smit and give the weather more time to clear.
