Why go to Laitlum
Beyond Smit village, the hills open into a broad grassy ridge. Below it, steep slopes drop into a deep gorge, with scattered villages and cloud moving between the hills.
About 25 km from Shillong, Laitlum works well as a half-day trip: an hour or two at the viewpoints, plus travel. Leave room for the weather, because fog can hide the valley and clear again within minutes. The long descent into the valley is a separate, demanding outing.

Shillong, then Smit, then the canyon
Laitlum is about 25 km from Shillong. The final stretch, roughly 5 km, runs from Smit village to the canyon. Arrange your return journey before you set out.
Road navigation is not a trekking route. Follow local advice for valley trails.
The descent into the valley
Meghalaya Tourism describes a stone stairway of thousands of steps running down towards Rasong. Going down is the easier half. The climb back is long and steep.
Treat it as its own outing. Go with a local guide, start early, carry water and food, and turn back if rain or fog sets in. You do not need to go down to enjoy Laitlum.

Different hours bring different conditions. The weather on the day has the final say.

Getting there
There is no direct local bus to Laitlum, so plan on a taxi or your own vehicle, including the return trip.
Where are you starting from?
The classic route, via Smit.
Drive via Smit to reach the canyon. Allow 1-1.5 hours each way as a planning buffer, not a live ETA; your pickup point, traffic, rain and fog can make the journey longer.
Taxis and connections
Taxis or day tours can be arranged from Shillong. A private return taxi is the simplest option. We recommend confirming it before departure through your accommodation or a local operator; advance booking is advice, not an entry requirement. Do not rely on finding a taxi or app cab at the viewpoint for your return.

Choose your gateway first.
Shillong Airport at Umroi has limited flight connections; Guwahati is the main regional air gateway. Arrange an onward road transfer and avoid a tight arrival-day sightseeing schedule.

Rail to Guwahati, road to the hills.
Guwahati Railway Station is the usual rail gateway. Continue to Shillong by taxi, shared cab or bus, then arrange a separate local journey to Laitlum.

Confirm the Shillong connection and local return taxi separately unless you have booked one vehicle for the full journey. Shared transport may involve waiting; check current departures locally.

Check transport to Smit locally before setting off. Arrange a taxi for both the final leg and the return; do not assume one will be waiting in Smit or at the canyon. If you cannot confirm both legs, arrange a return taxi from Shillong instead.

What is Laitlum famous for?
Laitlum is known for wide canyon views, steep green valleys, grassy hilltops and changing clouds. The main viewpoint is popular for landscape photography and a relaxed outing from Shillong. A walk into the valley is a separate, more demanding activity.
Is Laitlum in Cherrapunji?
No. Laitlum is near Smit in the East Khasi Hills, approximately 25 km from Shillong. Cherrapunji, also called Sohra, is a different destination. Specify the canyon viewpoint near Smit when arranging transport.
Why is Laitlum called the end of the world?
Laitlum is commonly translated as the end of the hills. The dramatic drop from the grassy ridge into the valley explains the nickname. End of the world is a travel description, not a literal location or the usual translation of the name.
How much time do I need at Laitlum Canyon?
Allow 1-2 hours at the main viewpoint plus travel time, as a planning suggestion. A half-day outing from Shillong leaves more flexibility for traffic and cloud. A valley trek needs a separate guide-led plan and considerably more time.
What is the best time to visit Laitlum?
