Nongjrong
A hill destination known for valley and cloud views. It is listed by Meghalaya Tourism as a nearby attraction, but nearby does not mean a quick roadside stop.
What to expect
Nongjrong is a Khasi village with a viewpoint at the top of the hill, looking out over deep valleys. On some mornings the valleys below fill with cloud, which is why visitors come for sunrise, but a sea of cloud is never guaranteed.
Planning an early start
A sunrise visit means leaving Shillong in the dark on narrow hill roads. Book a driver who knows the way, agree the waiting time and the return fare in advance, and check the forecast the evening before.
Visiting a village
Nongjrong is a place where people live, not a resort. Keep to paths, ask before photographing people or homes, take your rubbish away with you and ask locally before flying a drone.
Fitting it into your trip
Plan a separate morning and check the road route before committing. Cloud inversions and clear sunrises are not guaranteed.
Before you go
Confirm current access, opening arrangements and any charges locally. Directions and travel time can change with road conditions, so leave some slack in your day.
