Where are you starting from?
The classic route, via Smit.
Drive via Smit to reach the canyon. Allow 1-1.5 hours each way as a planning buffer, not a live ETA; your pickup point, traffic, rain and fog can make the journey longer.
Taxis and connections
Taxis or day tours can be arranged from Shillong. A private return taxi is the simplest option. We recommend confirming it before departure through your accommodation or a local operator; advance booking is advice, not an entry requirement. Do not rely on finding a taxi or app cab at the viewpoint for your return.
Before paying, agree the full return fare, included waiting time, extra waiting charges, parking and pickup time. Keep the driver's number. No fixed taxi tariff is verified here.

Choose your gateway first.
Shillong Airport at Umroi has limited flight connections; Guwahati is the main regional air gateway. Arrange an onward road transfer and avoid a tight arrival-day sightseeing schedule.

Rail to Guwahati, road to the hills.
Guwahati Railway Station is the usual rail gateway. Continue to Shillong by taxi, shared cab or bus, then arrange a separate local journey to Laitlum.

Confirm the Shillong connection and local return taxi separately unless you have booked one vehicle for the full journey. Shared transport may involve waiting; check current departures locally.
Leave transfer time after your train. The Shillong-to-Laitlum planning allowance does not include the journey from Guwahati or connection waits.

Your own car avoids a last-leg taxi connection. Check local road conditions before leaving, drive cautiously on bends and use designated parking. Confirm the current parking charge on arrival.
Save your route offline, carry enough fuel for the return drive and leave extra time to get back before conditions deteriorate.

Plan the last leg in advance.
Meghalaya Tourism reports no direct local bus to Laitlum. Local transport towards Smit may be available, but schedules and connections are not assured.
Taxis and connections
Check transport to Smit locally before setting off. Arrange a taxi for both the final leg and the return; do not assume one will be waiting in Smit or at the canyon. If you cannot confirm both legs, arrange a return taxi from Shillong instead.
A 15-minute final drive is not a full public-transport journey time. Add connection and waiting time, and agree the return pickup and fare in advance.
