Elephant Falls
A waterfall excursion in the Shillong area. Expect steps and potentially slippery surfaces; the full walk may not suit every mobility level.
Why it is called Elephant Falls
Its Khasi name, Kshaid Lai Pateng, refers to the three levels the water falls over. The British named it after an elephant-shaped rock at the falls, which was destroyed in an earthquake more than a century ago.
Walkways and steps
Railed walkways and steps lead from the top of the falls, past each level, to a pool at the bottom. The walk down is easy to underestimate: the climb back takes effort and wet steps are slippery. Stay out of the water after heavy rain and wherever signs or staff say so.
Location, hours and season
The falls are in Upper Shillong, about 12 km from the city; Meghalaya Tourism allows 30 to 40 minutes by road. Its page lists opening hours of 6 am to 6 pm and names June to September as the best season, when the monsoon fills the falls. Confirm the current hours and ticket price locally.
