Meghalaya Tourism describes a scenic trek from Laitlum down into the valley to Rai Um village, a glimpse of traditional Khasi life. It separately mentions a stone stairway of thousands of steps down to the village of Rasong. Confirm with your guide which route, and which village, you are heading for.

Is it right for you?

Any walk into this valley is steep, and the climb back up is the hard part. Start early, carry water and food, and turn back if rain, fog or thunder sets in. If anyone in your group is unsure about steep ground, the viewpoints on the ridge are the better plan.

Finding a guide

Meghalaya Tourism advises arranging a local guide who knows the area and the language. Ask your host or driver whether they can put you in touch with one, and agree the route, turnaround time and fee before you start.

Fitting it into your trip

Ask a local guide to confirm the exact trail, permission, weather, return time and your fitness. Do not rely on a driving map for this trail.
